Belfry-based Jonathan Watts became the latest in a long line of assistants from the Ryder Cup venue to secure a podium finish – claiming third spot – but has plenty more strings to his bow having already discovered a niche as the custom fitting expert for TaylorMade at the Belfry’s PGA National Academy.

In addition to matching up golfers with the correct clubs, Watts delivers a monthly verdict on the latest clubs hitting the shelves with one country’s leading golf magazines.

Watts plays down the role, even though it’s apparent what he has to say matters.

“I just tell them what I think,” said the 26-year-old. “It’s a great thing to do and it has certainly raised my profile. People come in and say they have read what I’ve had to say. I don’t favour anyone I just tell it how it is. I enjoy doing it because it gives me the chance to see what else is out there because I’m usually dealing with clubs at the top end of the market but this way I try out the mid-range and cheaper clubs.”
